Reconstruction Date
Following the Treaty of Alcanizes, Dinis I of Portugal orders the repair of the castle of Sabugal to consolidate the border defense. This work included the clearing of the space between the wall and castle (where houses were standing) and erecting and reinforcing walls. Works completed in 1303 under the direction of Frei Pedro of the Monastery of Alcobaça.

During the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, Sabugal received 300,000 reais from the rents of Sabugal and Alfaiates to spend on restoration works. João Ortega was the master of the works / foreman. The work was completed in 1515 according to an inscription on the main gate of the village.
